The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has announced that 35 innovative projects aiming to improve London’s high streets will be awarded £20,000 each to address issues of bringing vacant buildings into use, protecting cultural spaces, boosting community businesses and supporting employment on the high street. The funding will benefit Barking Town Centre Stakeholder Group to support its growth of the evening economy and community uses and Lewisham Council to assist its vision for increased footfall within the town centre. Other groups receiving funding include the Somali Advice and Forum of Information, the Future Wood Green BID, Greenwich Town Centre and the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea Youth Council. An additional £100,000 to £200,000 is expected to be made available in autumn 2021 to fund larger development projects.
