The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has concluded its inquiry into Meta Platforms Ireland Limited (MPIL), the data controller of Facebook, and its compliance with the data protection by design and default obligation under Article 25(1) and (2) of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (EU GDPR). The Irish DPC has adopted a decision on 25 November 2022, in which it imposed a fine of €265m, and issued a reprimand and an order requiring MPIL to bring its processing of data into compliance with the EU GDPR by taking various remedial steps within a specified timeframe.
