The government has responded to a call for evidence run by the Home Office on the subject of violence and abuse towards shop staff. The government response sets out the comments the call for evidence received, which includes 800 main responses from an estimated 3,500 individuals, businesses and other organisations. In the response, Minister for Crime and Policing, Kit Malthouse, stated that ‘the government recognises that the violence and abuse shop workers face can have a significant impact, not only physically but mentally and emotionally’ and that he is ‘particularly concerned to hear that individuals are not reporting retail crime, as they accept it as part of their job or because they do not have confidence in the response they will receive when they do’.
