Article summary
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland (FSS) have issued new precautionary advice on cannabidiol (CBD), recommending healthy adults should limit their consumption of CBD from food to 10mg per day, which is about four-five drops of 5% CBD oil. This follows new evidence from the industry and advice from the FSA’s independent scientific committee. The figure is down from the initial 70mg recommended limit the FSA issued in February 2020. While the FSA estimates that there is no acute risk with consuming more than 10mg a day based on available data, over time there is evidence of potential adverse effects on the liver and thyroid. There are implications for products currently on the market that contain more than 10mg of CBD per serving. The FSA will be working with industry to help consider what this updated advice means for products currently on its public list for England and Wales.
