The European Council has reviewed the EU’s progress in phasing out its dependency on Russian energy sources during the special meeting of 31 May 2022. The European Council calls for, as a short-term priority, the use of the EU Energy Purchase Platform, the external energy engagement strategy developed via the EU Energy Platform Task Force and the importance of EU energy sources for the security of supply. In the medium term, the European Council calls for the accelerated deployment of renewables by the speeding up of permit granting procedures for renewable projects, the improvement of energy efficiency and promoting energy savings, and completing and improving the interconnection of European gas and electricity networks by investing in and completing infrastructure for existing and new projects.
