Article summary
The European Commission has adopted measures that restrict intentionally added microplastics in products under Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 (EU REACH). These rules aim to prevent the release of around half a million tonnes of microplastics into the environment. They prohibit the sale of products containing microplastics and products that release microplastics when used, adopting a broad definition of microplastics covering all synthetic polymer particles below five millimetres that are organic, insoluble and resist degradation. There are exceptions and transition periods for affected parties to adapt to the new rules. The first measures, such as banning loose glitter and microbeads, will take effect 20 days after the restriction enters into force. Other sales bans will be implemented after a longer period to allow affected stakeholders time to transition to alternatives.
