The Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) has welcomed the UK government’s decision to remove many of the 2023 sunset clauses in the Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) Bill (REULRR Bill). The CTSI has said the sunset clauses would have meant the removal of over 4,000 pieces of EU derived legislation on 31 December 2023 if they were not reviewed and rewritten. The CTSI has said that legislation covering protections for food, product safety laws and regulations affecting animal health and welfare will no longer be lost on 31 December 2023. CTSI chief executive, Josh Herriman, has also said that while the UK government’s decision is welcome, the REULRR Bill has been a ‘major distraction for Government departments’ and stalled progress in other areas, including the product safety review.
