The European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakides, has presented a new approach to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Kyriakides outlined four points of action EU Member States must focus on to allow for a more sustainable management of the pandemic—implement integrated, sustainable, year-round surveillance systems for all acute respiratory illness including coronavirus and influenza, prepare for possibly increasing numbers of coronavirus cases or seasonal influenza by investing in hospital capacity and testing efforts, increase the uptake in vaccinations and push forward with booster campaigns, and strengthen overall pandemic preparedness by improving access to coronavirus vaccines globally as well as tackling vaccine misinformation and disinformation.
