Article summary
The European Commission has launched a consultation to seek views from businesses, organisations and individuals on a legal instrument which could ‘deter and counteract coercive practices by non-EU countries’. The aim of the 'anti-coercion instrument' is to empower the Commission to introduce restrictions (trade, investment, etc) against a non-EU country which unduly interferes with EU or Member State policies. The Commission aims to collate the input from the consultation to develop a legislative proposal to be adopted by the end of 2021, which will form part of an overall strategy of the initiative. The consultation closes at midnight, Tuesday 15 June 2021.
