Article summary
The Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC) has published an internal report on the Open Radio Access Network (RAN), which is a software-based network solution based on open and modular interfaces within the RAN. The aim of Open RAN is to make these interfaces more interoperable, which subsequently means that hardware and software components may be provided by multiple suppliers. BEREC considers that Open RAN is the 'logical next step in the technological development of communications networks', and a tool to implement measures in the EU toolbox on 5G cybersecurity. BEREC has not published the report as it is part of an internal decision making process.
