The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has published the government response to the call for evidence on enabling or requiring hydrogen-ready industrial boiler equipment, which ran from December 2021 to March 2022. BEIS confirmed it intends to sponsor the British Standards Institution to ensure that hydrogen-ready industrial-sized boiler equipment is covered by a Publicly Available Specification, as well as continue to assess the merits of requiring large boilers to be hydrogen-ready. BEIS also launched a consultation on its proposals regarding domestic gas boiler efficiency, hydrogen-ready boilers and hybrid heating systems. The proposals seek views on improving boiler and heating system efficiency through improvements to minimum standards, mandating that all newly-installed gas boilers are hydrogen-ready from 2026, and the potential role of gas boiler-electric heat pump hybrids in heat decarbonisation in the 2020s and 2030s. The consultation will close at 11.45 pm on 21 March 2023.
