HM Treasury has announced that business ratepayers who have been adversely affected by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic will receive a £1.5bn discount on their bills. The measures announced apply to those businesses who have been unable to benefit from the £16bn business rates relief for retail, hospitality and leisure businesses. The £1.5bn pot will be distributed based on which sectors have suffered the most economically, rather than based on property values, which the government hopes will ensure the support is provided in the fastest and fairest way.
