Practice notesThis Practice Note provides practical guidance on Chapter 3 of the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement which regulates the usage of sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures in trade between the UK and the EU. It provides guidance on the scope of SPS measures in the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA), the rights and obligations of the UK and the EU, the general principles of SPS measures in the TCA, certification, import conditions, notification requirements, reliance on emergency SPS measures and the cooperation between the parties.
Introduction
As a free trade agreement, the TCA not only regulates tariffs on goods traded between these two customs territories, but it also addresses other aspects that are required to trade in goods or that may be regarded as non-tariff barriers to trade. This includes:
