DESNZ publishes report on hydrogen to power generation costs and technical barriers

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has published a research report examining the technical readiness, cost implications and deployment barriers associated with hydrogen-based power generation technologies in the UK. Commissioned from Baringa, the report analyses a range of plant archetypes, including turbines, internal combustion engines and electrochemical systems. It covers several key topics, including: (1) the cost of retrofitting or repowering existing unabated gas plants to run on 100% hydrogen; (2) the cost of blending hydrogen into existing unabated gas plants; (3) barriers to deployment and scale-up and (4) how costs are expected to evolve over time as the technology matures.

DESNZ publishes CfD AR7 results

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has published the results of Contracts for Difference (CfD) Allocation Round 7 (AR7), which commenced on 24 July 2025. The publication confirms the successful applicants in the seventh allocation round and sets out details of projects awarded contracts, including project name, region, applicant, technology type, size (MW), strike price (£/MWh), delivery year and pot. The results relate only to contracts that have been offered, with contracts to be signed between developers and the Low Carbon Contracts Company as the CfD counterparty.

Commission announces new EU PFAS monitoring rules for drinking water

The European Commission has announced that new EU-wide rules under the recast Drinking Water Directive have come into force requiring Member States to systematically monitor and report per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water. Effective from 12 January 2026, Member States must comply with harmonised limit values, take corrective measures where exceedances occur, and inform both the public and the Commission. The directive introduces simplified reporting and marks the first EU-wide PFAS monitoring. Technical guidelines issued in 2024 support consistent measurement methods. Adopted in 2020 and transposed by January 2023, the directive aims to guarantee safe drinking water and uphold high standards in line with the Zero Pollution Action Plan and Water Resilience Strategy.

DESNZ confirms 3 updated energy National Policy Statements come into force

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ ) has confirmed that three updated energy National Policy Statements, EN-1, EN-3 and EN-5, have come into force following their formal designation under section 6(9) of the Planning Act 2008 and laying before Parliament. The Statements apply to England and Wales and now have statutory effect for decision-making on nationally significant energy infrastructure projects.
