The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has announced that the Great British Energy (GBE) Bill has passed through Parliament, with legislative consent from all three devolved governments. The Bill establishes GBE, a new publicly owned energy company backed by £8.3bn in government funding over the current parliamentary term. GBE will invest in clean energy projects across the UK, including: £200m for new rooftop solar power and renewable energy schemes for schools, hospitals, and communities; £4m for Scottish community energy projects; and £3m for local renewable projects in Wales. The Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband, is expected to set out GBE’s strategic priorities, including the technologies it will focus on and how public benefit will be be factored into its investment decisions.
