The Construction Leadership Council (CLC) has published Version 4 of the Common Assessment Standard (CAS). The CAS is an industry-agreed pre-qualification standard, developed by Build UK and endorsed by the CLC. This latest version has been streamlined following the withdrawal of PAS 91 and updated to include a new Building Safety section, ensuring that it can be used to demonstrate that companies have the ‘organisational capability’ to fulfil their roles under the Building Safety Act 2022.

The Construction Leadership Council (CLC), in collaboration with the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) and other key bodies, has published an advisory note on BS 9991:2024 – Fire safety in the design, management and use of residential buildings. The Construction Leadership Council (CLC) has published a building safety update in response to a written ministerial statement regarding fire safety and evacuation proposals, the extension of recognition of Conformité Européenne (CE) marking for construction products, and updates to Approved Document B to remove references to the outdated National Classes fire testing standards and make provision for sprinklers in new care homes. The CLC has also highlighted that the British Standards Institution (BSI) has made a request for comment on the core competence criteria set out in BS 8680-1, which must be made by 15 October 2024. The Passive Fire Knowledge Group (PFKG) published three knowledge shares. Knowledge share 10 addresses active fire curtain standards, noting updated third-party certification for both BS 8524-1:2025 and BS 8524-2:2025. Knowledge share 11 clarifies that radiation (W) classification is typically more appropriate than insulation (I) for active fire curtains. Knowledge share 12 distinguishes fire barriers from cavity barriers, highlighting their differing fire resistance performance requirements and the risks arising from confusion between the two.

The Construction Leadership Council (CLC)’s People and Skills workstream has published a report establishing a framework for digital competencies across the built environment workforce. The framework defines the core components of digital competency, provides a practical tool for identifying upskilling needs and calls for investment in training programmes. It aims to create a common, industry-wide understanding of digital competency and sets out four recommendations for industry action: (1) developing organisational visions for digital competency; (2) evaluating current maturity or competency levels in each category; (3) addressing gaps through partnerships with government and training providers; and (4) aligning skills needs with organisational strategic objectives. The framework focuses on foundational digital and data competencies intended to deliver improved productivity, safety and sustainability outcomes across planning, construction and operational activities.
