The European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) has published its report on costs and past performance, examining the costs, charges, and value for money characteristics of retail investment products within its remit from 2020–2023. The report shows that insurance-based investment products (IBIPs) experienced increased net returns, with unit-linked and hybrid products achieving positive returns. However, these returns were outpaced by inflation, and high costs continued to impact value for money. There was a notable rise in demand for sustainable products with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) features, which outperformed their non-ESG counterparts. Personal pension products also recorded positive returns, with unit-linked features providing higher returns compared to profit participation features. The report concluded that consumers willing to accept higher risks could secure better long-term returns, whereas those preferring safer options found greater value in profit participation products.
