The European Commission (EC) has announced that it has decided to send a reasoned opinion (INFR(2020)2202) to the United Kingdom, following its failure to comply with EU Law on free movement of EU citizens and their families, specifically the right to move and reside freely within the territory of the EU Member States according to Article 45 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. The EC6 is a 700 MWe class heavy-water moderated and heavy-water cooled pressure tube reactor. Heavy water is a natural form of water used as a moderator to slow down the fission chain reaction neutrons in the reactor. It is one of the most efficient moderators and enables the CANDU design to use natural uranium as fuel, which is unique to CANDU reactors. One of the unique features of this reactor design is its ability to use alternative fuels such as recovered uranium from the reprocessing of used light water reactor fuel, low-enriched uranium and plutonium mixed oxide, thorium and actinides, in addition to the conventional natural uranium.

The European Court of Auditors (ECA) has published a report, which found that the EU's plastic-based own resource, introduced in 2021, has faced challenges with data comparability and reliability, as well as recycling checks on plastic packaging waste. The report indicates that these issues led to an underestimation of the amount of non-recycled packaging waste by Member States—€1.1bn less for 2021, which had to be offset by another resource to balance the budget. Auditors also found that at least one key provision of Directive 94/62/EC (the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive) had not been properly incorporated by Member States, that different countries use different compilation methods, and that only six Member States reported recycling data at the point of entry into the recycling operation, as required by the Directive.
