The European Commission and national market surveillance authorities have published the results of the 2026 product safety sweep, covering nearly 1,700 online listings across 35 marketplaces for childcare and gym products. The sweep assessed compliance with key information requirements under Regulation (EU) 2023/988 (General Product Safety Regulation), finding that 91% of marketplaces had registered in the Safety Gate Portal, up from 53% in 2025, and 100% had designated a single contact point for consumers, up from 64%. However, only 58% of listings provided manufacturer details, a responsible person in the EU and product identification simultaneously. National authorities issued 560 orders for non-compliant listings following screenings conducted between May and July 2026. The Commission and national authorities will continue monitoring compliance and pursue enforcement where needed.

The European Commission and European Environment Agency have released their second Zero Pollution Monitoring and Outlook report, alongside the fourth Clean Air Outlook report, revealing varied progress towards the EU's 2030 environmental targets. While improvements have been observed in air quality, pesticide use and marine litter reduction, significant challenges persist regarding noise pollution, microplastic contamination, nutrient pollution and waste management. The Commission has responded with substantial legislative reforms, including revisions to key environmental directives covering industrial emissions, air quality, wastewater treatment, waste management, water frameworks and mercury regulation. A new Nature Restoration Regulation has also been introduced, in addition to a 2023 proposal for legislation to target plastic pellet pollution. In addition, the Commission has launched a Zero Pollution Dashboard to monitor regional progress across EU Member States, with 15 regions across five countries currently demonstrating lowest pollution levels.

The European Commission has reported that, two years after the EU Digital Services Act (EU DSA) began to apply, online platforms in the EU have reversed nearly 50 million content moderation decisions following user appeals, with 30% of 165 million challenged decisions overturned through internal complaint mechanisms. In the first half of 2025, 99% of moderation actions were taken under platforms’ own terms and conditions rather than to remove illegal content under EU or national law, while certified out-of-court dispute settlement bodies reviewed over 1,800 cases concerning Facebook, Instagram and TikTok and overturned 52% of closed disputes, restoring content or accounts more quickly and at lower cost than court proceedings. The Commission stated that EU DSA grants users the right to challenge decisions affecting their content or accounts, prohibits targeted advertising to minors, requires online marketplaces to prevent the sale of illegal goods, ensure trader traceability and inform affected consumers, and enhances transparency by providing researchers and civil society with access to information on platforms’ moderation practices to strengthen accountability.

The European Commission has published its report to the European Parliament and the Council on the macroprudential review for credit institutions, the systemic risks relating to non-bank financial intermediaries (NBFIs) and their interconnectedness with credit institutions, under Article 513 of Regulation (EU) No 575/2013 (the EU Capital Requirements Regulation (EU CRR)). The report reviews the EU macroprudential framework set out in the EU CRR and the Capital Requirements Directive 2013/36/EU (EU CRD).

The European Commission has published an interim evaluation of the EU4Health Programme, confirming that it is on track to achieve its objectives. With a budget of €4.6bn for 2021–2027, the programme supports Member States in strengthening healthcare systems, improving crisis preparedness and expanding access to care. It has also enabled the launch of several major initiatives, including the Expert Group on Public Health, the European Health Data Space and the Health Technology Assessment framework. The evaluation reports progress in areas such as crisis preparedness, disease prevention, cancer and rare diseases and highlights the programme’s added value in capacity building, strategic planning and innovation.

The European Commission has issued requests for information under the EU Digital Services Act (DSA) to Apple App Store, Booking.com, Bing, Google Play and Google Search regarding their processes for identifying and managing financial scam risks. The companies must provide detailed information on how they detect fraudulent content and the measures they take to mitigate these risks. For Apple App Store and Google Play, this includes fraudulent applications imitating legitimate banking, investment and trading apps. Booking.com is asked to explain its approach to addressing fake accommodation listings, while Bing and Google Search must set out how they manage links and advertisements that lead users to fraudulent websites. The Commission is also seeking details on these companies’ advertising repositories, as well as information from Apple App Store, Google Play and Booking.com on their business identity verification procedures under the ‘Know Your Business Customer’ rules.

The European Commission has requested European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) to provide technical information and advice on the suitability of establishing minimum common standards for insurance guarantee schemes (IGS) within the EU in the context of Article 98 of the Insurance Recovery and Resolution Directive (IRRD). This includes an assessment of the current state of IGS across Member States, including coverage levels, types of insurance covered and activation triggers. EIOPA is also asked to analyse the impact of IGS on policyholders and insurance markets, particularly in cross-border contexts and to update previous data on insurer failures and near-misses, with a focus on the role of IGS in mitigating losses.

The European Commission has requested information from Meta regarding its compliance with obligations to give researchers access to publicly accessible data, per the EU Digital Services Act (DSA), after discontinuing CrowdTangle on 14 August 2024. The Commission seeks details on Meta's content library and API, including data access and functionalities. Meta must respond by 6 September 2024, and the Commission will then determine next steps, which may include interim measures and non-compliance decisions.

The European Commission has withdrawn several decisions regarding Illumina’s acquisition of GRAIL following the Court of Justice ruling that the Commission lacked jurisdiction. This includes annulling a €432m fine imposed on Illumina. The withdrawn decisions encompass the phase II investigation, prohibition of the acquisition, interim and restorative measures, and the fine for premature implementation. The Court of Justice’s decision on 3 September 2024 means Illumina will not be required to pay the fine.

The European Commission has issued a statement in response to the decisions in Auken and Others v Commission and Courtois and Others v Commission. These cases concern access to the coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine contracts and related information negotiated by members of the Commission.

The European Commission has published a review of the Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA) on 27 March 2025, examining its operations since establishment in September 2021. The review assesses HERA's effectiveness in strengthening EU health security through medical countermeasure development, production and distribution. With €6bn funding through 2027, HERA coordinates threat assessment, research, stockpiling and crisis response. The review identifies areas for improvement including clearer delineation of responsibilities with other EU bodies and more tailored funding mechanisms. The Commission maintains HERA should remain an internal service rather than becoming a separate agency.

The European Commission has issued a call for advice to the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) on the review of specific items in the Solvency II Delegated Regulation (EU) 2015/35. While co-legislators are in the process of formally adopting the amendments to Directive 2009/138/EC (the Solvency II Directive), they also plan to resume the work on the review of Delegated Regulation. EIOPA is therefore asked to provide technical advice on the items identified in an annex to the letter by 31 January 2025 as regards proportionality and direct exposures to qualifying central counterparties (CCPs); and by 30 June 2025 in relation to the prudential treatment of cryptoassets.
