The European Commission has adopted a ban on the use of Bisphenol A (BPA) in food contact materials, citing potential harmful health impacts. The ban, which follows a positive vote by EU Member States and scrutiny by the Council and European Parliament, is based on the European Food Safety Authority's latest scientific assessment. It includes an 18-month phase-out period for most products and extends to other harmful bisphenols affecting reproductive and endocrine systems. The Commission states this measure aims to maintain high food safety standards and protect EU citizens from harmful chemicals in food and drink contact materials.

The European Commission has published a call for evidence on fostering integration, scale and efficient supervision across the single market, in relation to the EU’s Savings and Investment Union (SIU) strategy.  The call for evidence requests stakeholder’ views in relation to: identifying the barriers that prevent the EU’s trading and post-trading infrastructures from fully capitalising on the benefits of a genuinely frictionless single market; assessing whether the existing regulatory and supervisory framework is fit for the capital markets, particularly for market operators with significant cross-border activities or those operating in emerging sectors; and reviewing the European Supervisory Authorities’ (ESAs) toolbox to assess areas where their effectiveness and efficiency can be strengthened and improved. Feedback is requested by 5 June 2025.

The European Commission has launched parallel consultations on two new maritime sector initiatives: an EU Ports Strategy and an EU Industrial Maritime Strategy. The Ports Strategy aims to address competitiveness, energy transition, security and innovation challenges for European ports, while providing recommendations and guidance to stakeholders. The Industrial Maritime Strategy focuses on strengthening the competitiveness and sustainability of Europe's waterborne manufacturing sector during its green and digital transformation. Both initiatives will outline measures for innovation and investment support. The consultation period for both strategies runs from 30 June 2025 to 28 July 2025.

The European Commission has launched a call for evidence to support the evaluation of Directive 2011/70/Euratom (Radioactive Waste Directive) and Directive 2006/117/Euratom (Shipments Directive). The call seeks input from the public and stakeholders on the safe and responsible management of radioactive waste and spent fuel within the EU, with a particular focus on the effectiveness of the Directives and their implementation at national level. The consultation is open until 26 June 2026.

The European Commission has launched a call for evidence for an integrated framework for climate resilience and risk management across the EU. The initiative should help Member States respond more effectively to increasing climate risks, as Europe warms at twice the global average, and will build upon the EU’s Climate Adaptation Strategy, as published in 2021. Stakeholder feedback will inform the development of the framework, which is scheduled for adoption in the fourth quarter of 2026. The consultation period will run from 24 July 2025 until 04 September 2025.

The European Commission has launched a call for evidence to support its review of Directive (EU) 2019/790 on copyright in the Digital Single Market (CDSM Directive). The initiative seeks to gather information to inform the evaluation of the Directive and to seek feedback on the challenges linked to the exercise of copyright and related rights in the context of technological developments and potential ways to address them. The call for evidence closes on 25 June 2026.

The European Commission has called for the full implementation of Directive (EU) 2023/970 (the EU Pay Transparency Directive) as the transposition deadline expired on 7 June 2026. The Commission says that the Directive, which has been in force since 2023, aims to strengthen the right to equal pay for equal work or work of equal value by introducing greater pay transparency and establishing a framework for assessing whether pay structures comply with EU equal pay rules. It adds that the measures are intended to help workers identify and address pay discrimination, while promoting fairer remuneration practices.

The European Commission has closed its EU Digital Markets Act (EU DMA) investigation into Apple's user choice obligations following changes to iOS, including a modified browser choice screen and expanded app uninstallation options. In parallel, the Commission issued preliminary findings that Apple's alternative app distribution terms may breach DMA requirements, citing concerns over the Core Technology Fee and eligibility requirements. Apple can now respond to these preliminary findings. The developments stem from investigations opened on 25 March 2024 and 24 June 2024 respectively.

The European Commission has announced the conclusion of negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and Investment Protection Agreement (IPA) with Indonesia. The agreements will eliminate duties on 98.5% of tariff lines, protect 221 EU geographical indications and establish new legal frameworks for services and investments. The deals include enforceable provisions on climate and workers' rights, with the Paris Agreement as an essential element. Following legal revision and translation, the agreements require Council approval, European Parliament consent and Indonesian ratification before implementation. EU exporters are expected to save €600m annually in duties.

The European Commission has announced that it has completed the eligibility checks for two European Citizens' Initiatives (ECIs), registering the initiative entitled ‘Stop Killing The Internet: No Digital ID & No Age Verification' and declining to register the ‘Save Europe Act' initiative. The Commission found that the digital identity initiative met the formal conditions for registration under the European Citizens' Initiative Regulation and states that its organisers may begin collecting signatures within six months. If the initiative secures at least one million valid signatures from citizens across at least seven Member States, the Commission will consider whether to take further action.

The European Commission has announced development of the first-ever EU-level climate resilience legislation as part of a new European Plan for Climate Resilience. Speaking at the Climate Summit 2025 in New York on 22 September, Commissioner Hoekstra outlined how the legislation aims to protect assets and markets in an increasingly volatile climate environment. The Commission emphasised the economic case for adaptation, stating that €1 invested in prevention could save up to €14 in repairs. The plan includes measures to increase both public and private sector climate finance, with specific focus on debt-for-climate resilience operations following a 2024 pilot programme in Barbados targeting climate-resilient water management.

In a meeting with the Parliamentary Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) held on 27 April 2026, Commissioner Roswall confirmed that Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 (EU REACH) will not be reopened for major revisions, as was originally proposed in the 2020 Chemicals Strategy.
