The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has announced that there is a 66 percent likelihood that global temperatures are likely to reach record levels between 2023-2027, due to heat-trapping greenhouse gases and an ‘El Niño’ event. The WMO predicts that the annual average near-surface global temperature will be over 1.5˚C above pre-industrial levels for at least one year, although there is only a 32 percent chance that the five-year mean will exceed the 1.5˚C threshold, according to the Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update produced by the UK’s Met Office.
