The Planning Inspectorate (PINS) has issued a new Advice Note on virtual examination events where an application for a development consent order for a nationally significant infrastructure project proceeds via one or more virtual events. PINS initially developed virtual events in response to government advice about limiting the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) by maintaining social distancing. However, PINS now considers that virtual events may offer wider efficiency benefits, including time and cost savings, for persons involved in examinations, hearing and inquiries. On that basis, virtual events may be used more broadly, even after the coronavirus restrictions end.
