In a speech to the Convention of the North on 25 January 2023, the Secretary of State (SoS) for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Michael Gove, outlined the government's plans to level up the North of England. The SoS highlighted the government's commitment to investing in infrastructure and transport, creating jobs and skills, and improving public services. Gove also discussed the need for a stronger devolution settlement that would give the North more control, which has been started by the introduction of stronger powers for local and regional Mayors, and introduced the new Office for Local Government, or OfLog, which will be used to produce comparisons of delivery across local authorities and mayoral combined authorities.
