The Scottish Government has confirmed that the legislation banning single-use plastic items including plastic cutlery, plates, straws, beverage stirrers and food containers made of expanded polystyrene came into force on 1 June 2022. The Environmental Protection (Single-use Plastic Products) (Scotland) Regulations 2021, SSI 2021/410, makes it an offence for businesses in Scotland to provide the banned items, of which around 700 million is currently used in Scotland every year. Guidance relating to the implementation of the Regulations has also been published by the Scottish Government.
