Article summary
Ofcom has announced the introduction of new rules allowing those who use British Sign Language (BSL) to contact the emergency services via a video relay. The current rules allow those with hearing or speech difficulties to send text messages to 999 in order to receive the help required. However, this system has been criticised for its over-reliance on written English, which can lead to misunderstandings. Under the new system, telephone and broadband companies will be required to offer a free video relay service for BSL users to contact emergency services through an Ofcom-approved mobile app and website, which must run 24/7.
