Article summary
The North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA), the Crown Estate (TCE) and Crown Estate Scotland (CES) have reiterated their commitment of close collaboration to help reach the UK government’s ambitious carbon storage targets of 20–30 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year by 2030, and over 50 million tonnes by 2035. The NSTA, TCE and CES emphasise that a co-ordinated approach to managing the seabed is imperative in order to realise the potential of the UK Continental Shelf as a critical energy and carbon abatement source, as well as accelerate the path to net zero. Their collaborative work includes identifying suitable seabed areas and subsurface geology for carbon storage, as well as analysing the impacts on the marine environment.
