Article summary

The National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) has published its fifth annual monitoring report. The report notes that the government had pledged to increase the proportion of GDP to be spent on economic infrastructure from 1.1% to 1.3% from 2025. It sets out some of the NIC's key recommendations that have been delivered or progressed this year, such as the establishment of the UK Infrastructure Bank, the acceleration of gigabit broadband coverage and the deployment of more renewable electricity capacity and some important long-term strategies that have been delivered, such as the Net Zero Strategy, the Levelling Up White Paper and the enactment of the Environment Act 2021. However, the report notes that overall progress against key goals over the past year has been too slow, in particular in relation to climate change and levelling up.
