The House of Lords Constitution Committee has published a letter to Simon Hoare MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Minister for Local Government) for the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities on the findings of their inquiry into the introduction of voter ID. The inquiry considered the impact of the introduction of voter ID and lessons to be learned ahead of the next local elections in May 2024 and forthcoming general election and the letter sets out the Committee’s conclusions and recommendations. These include raising awareness about voter ID and engaging harder to reach demographics, conducting research into adding to the list of accepted forms of ID to provide more options to those who do not own an existing accepted ID and the importance of increasing voter registration as a prerequisite to bolstering Voter Authority Certificate applications.
