Article summary
The European Parliament has agreed to extend the EU Digital COVID Certificate framework for another year until June 2023. The European Parliament noted that to ensure that citizens are able to benefit from their free movement rights regardless of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, its plenary has endorsed the decision of the Civil Liberties Committee to open extension negotiations with EU Member States. In addition to extending the EU Digital COVID Certificate scheme, the changes would enable Member States to grant test certificates based on new types of antigen assay tests. Moreover, to assess if the scheme is necessary and proportionate, Members of the European Parliament have sought a review of the scheme after six months, with further repeal where required. The European Parliament noted that negotiations with the European Council to agree on the extension can take place immediately prior to the expiry of the current scheme on 30 June 2022.
