The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has released a press statement in relation to the Grand Chamber hearing on 27 September 2023 in the case of Duarte Agostinho and Others v Portugal. The case concerns the greenhouse emissions from 33 Member States who the applicants believe are in breach of the ECHR by failing to cut greenhouse gas emissions according to their Paris Agreement commitments. The applicants believe that this contributes to global warming such as heatwaves and forest fires that have occurred in Portugal creating a risk to the applicants’ living conditions and health.
