The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) has announced that the UK has reached an agreement with the EU and Norway to set fishing catch limits for 2022 in the North Sea. The catch limits will impact six jointly managed fish stocks, with five being set in line with, or lower than, the level advised by scientists of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea. This agreement establishes plans to review the management and distribution of shared stocks including hake in order to safeguard stocks important for the entire UK catching sector. Defra further highlights that the catch levels as agreed provide fishing opportunities with an estimated value of around £190m for the UK fishing industry.
