Article summary

Business Secretary and COP26 President, Alok Sharma, has delivered a speech detailing the government’s aim to ramp up ambition towards a climate-resilient, zero-carbon economy. Sharma emphasised that businesses are absolutely vital in supporting the green recovery and transition to net zero. He went on to explain that his department wants ‘all countries to submit more ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions, committing to further cuts in carbon emissions by 2030.’ Sharma also announced that the first round of the UK PACT Green Recovery Challenge will launch from August 2020. British and international organisations will be able to bid into a £12m fund, to support countries in Africa, Asia and South America to develop their green industries. The UK government will fund the best projects and approaches to be deployed globally, and share UK expertise to support others with their own green recovery.
