The government has responded to the European Scrutiny Committee’s (ESC) inquiry into the future operation of the Channel Tunnel Fixed Link, saying that ‘considerable progress has been made in a number of key areas in relation to safety’. The ESC had supported the UK government’s position that talks relating to the Channel Tunnel should be held between the UK and France, rather than with the EU. A co-operation arrangement was signed by UK and French authorities in charge of the tunnel in January 2021. Talks are ongoing, but according to the Minister responsible for the Channel Tunnel, Rachel Maclean, they are ‘progressing well’.
