High Court of Australia: A challenge from tobacco giants—British American Tobacco, Britain's Imperial Tobacco, Philip Morris and Japan Tobacco—against new legislation on plain-packaging laws due to come into force later in 2012 has been rejected. The High Court’s decision means new laws will come into effect from 1 December 2012. The tobacco companies’ argument was that the new rules effectively remove their intellectual property rights without compensation. The Australian government has denied these claims.
