Welsh Government announces £9m in funding from Great British Energy for schools and public buildings
The Welsh Government has announced £9m in funding from Great British Energy, the UK government's publicly owned energy company, to support the installation of solar panels on schools and public buildings across Wales. The Welsh Government will oversee delivery of the funding, with up to £4m allocated to solar photovoltaic projects on public buildings through the Wales Funding Programme. Beneficiaries include Coleg Cambria in Wrexham; Porthcawl Comprehensive School and Glan Llyn Primary School and Jubilee Park Primary School in Newport. The remaining funding will support wider renewable investment, including a new scheme called Ymestyn, which aims to provide gap funding for public sector and community decarbonisation projects, such as solar canopies and renewable-integrated battery energy storage. Further information on Ymestyn will be made available when the scheme launches in the coming weeks.
