Meta joins EU data transfer appeals that could set precedent for future cases

MLex: Meta Platforms Ireland has been allowed to intervene in two joined appeals before the EU’s top court, supporting the European Commission in a dispute over alleged unlawful data transfers to the US via the Facebook Login feature. If the court confirms the Commission’s liability, it could also establish that Meta acted unlawfully—a finding that may set a precedent for compensation claims linked to data transfers made between the Schrems II ruling and the adoption of the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.

LinkedIn revises EU data use plans for AI training after regulator recommendations

MLex: LinkedIn has revised its plans to use EU members’ personal data to train its generative artificial intelligence (AI) models following recommendations from Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC), the regulator said. After the DPC highlighted a series of risks in LinkedIn’s proposed data processing, the company made various changes, including tighter data limits, stronger safeguards for minors, and clearer transparency for users, the regulator said in a statement on 7 November 2025. It added that while it had not approved the company’s AI data use, it considered further enforcement unnecessary but would continue to monitor compliance.

Meta warns of regulatory ‘headwinds’ in US, EU, losses from addictive-design cases

MLex: Even as Meta Platforms reported a record US$51bn in quarterly revenue 28 October 2025, the social media giant warned that a thicket of US trials it faces in 2026 over the harm to young users caused by the alleged addictive design of Facebook and Instagram ‘may ultimately result in a material loss’. It also said the threat of the European Commission ordering changes to Meta’s ‘pay or consent’ targeted-advertising model could have ‘a significant negative impact on our European revenue’ before the end of 2025. On artificial intelligence, Meta doubled its capital expenditures during the first nine months of 2025 over the previous year as it races to build computing power in preparation for the achievement of artificial general intelligence (AGI).

EU judges to rule on Ryanair’s fight against Italian watchdog over Irish raid

MLex: Ryanair’s challenge to an Irish dawn raid ordered by Italy’s competition authority will come before EU judges to rule on whether the company can access certain communications between the two regulators. Italy’s Council of State is seeking guidance from the EU’s Court of Justice on whether the exchanges were ‘internal’ and therefore blocked from disclosure to Ryanair.
