Broker jailed for fraud that cost aviation industry £39m

Law360, London: A former aeroplane parts broker was sentenced on 23 February 2026 to more than four years in prison for forging the certification of parts in a fraud that grounded commercial jets and cost the aviation industry £39m.

ESMA consults on guarantees as CCP collateral and investment policy standards following EMIR 3 review

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has launched a public consultation on draft regulatory technical standards (RTS) amending Commission Delegated Regulation 153/2013, following the review of the European Market Infrastructure Regulation (EMIR 3). The consultation seeks views on conditions for central counterparties (CCPs) to accept public guarantees, public bank guarantees and commercial bank guarantees as collateral, conditions for debt instruments as eligible financial instruments for CCP investment policy, and highly secured arrangements for emission allowances posted as margins or default fund contributions. EMIR 3 permanently broadens the types of guarantees acceptable as eligible collateral and extends scope to clients of CCPs that are non-financial counterparties. The consultation closes on 30 April 2026, with ESMA expected to submit final draft RTS to the European Commission by end-2026.

SFO secures prison sentence for aircraft engine parts fraud

The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has secured a prison sentence of four years and eight months for Jose Alejandro Zamora Yrala, director of AOG Technics, after uncovering a £39.3m global aircraft engine parts fraud involving over 60,000 parts sold with forged Authorised Release Certificates (ARCs), risking public safety and disrupting the aviation industry. The SFO found that between January 2019 and July 2023 Zamora doctored genuine ARCs, invented fake employees and created false memos, with most parts linked to the CFM56 engine. The operation collapsed when Safran identified a fake certificate, prompting safety alerts from UK, US and EU aviation authorities and grounding planes worldwide. Zamora pleaded guilty to fraudulent trading in December 2025, with the SFO stating the scheme posed serious safety risks.
