23 Consecration of churchyards

It is usual to arrange for modern churchyards of the Church of England, or additions to such churchyards, to be consecrated by the bishop of the diocese or by a bishop lawfully appointed by them as their commissary1. As the consecration of land (as opposed to dedication)2 has legal as well as religious significance so far as the Church of England is concerned3, this is a legal matter as well as a religious ceremony4.
