61 Copyright

61.1 Protection in general

The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 gives copyright protection to every original literary, dramatic, musical or artistic work1. Sound recordings, films, broadcasts and the typographical arrangement of published editions are also protected by copyright2.

Subject to certain exceptions3, copyright in a literary, dramatic, musical or artistic work lasts for a period of 70 years from the end of the year in which the author dies4. Copyright in sound recordings lasts for 50 years from the end of the year in which the recording is made, or 50 years
