64.4 Registered design right

To be registrable as a United Kingdom or European Community registered design, designs must be new1 and have ‘individual character’2. They must also not be solely dictated by the relevant product’s technical function or by the shape of another article with which they are to be connected3.

Protection is afforded to the design regardless of the type of article to which it is to be applied and is available to items including graphic symbols, computer icons, typefaces, handicraft and other one-off items4.
