The CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) has reported that a fraudster who has been jailed for a multi-million-pound betting syndicate scam. The 67-year old, Michael Stanley, was sentenced to six years in jail at Maidstone Crown Court after he pleaded guilty to a series of fraud offences which the prosecution showed were committed between 2013 and February 2019 under the name 'Layzey Racing Syndicate'.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has reported that Abdulla Mohammad Ali Bin Beyat Alfalasi, a convicted money launderer, has been ordered to pay £3,496,778 after a Confiscation Order was granted. Alfalasi facilitated the transport of illegally obtained cash to Dubai worth approximately up to £110m. The illegal cash was packed into suitcases and carried onto business class flights. Alfalasi was sentenced to nine years and seven months’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to removing criminal property from England and Wales. Confiscation proceedings were conducted by the CPS Proceeds of Crime Division, working with the National Crime Agency, to recover criminal proceeds. Alfalasi's available assets for confiscation were determined by examination of bank accounts, valuable possessions including interests in property in Dubai, monies in bank and crypto accounts and several vehicles. The Confiscation Order will need to be paid within three months or Alfalasi will receive an additional prison sentence of ten years.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has reported that Myck Djurberg, has been found guilty of fraud, worth £3.5m, for selling houseboats on a stretch of the River Thames without residential licences and without appropriate planning permission. Djurberg built a series of houseboats on a boatyard and intended to develop the boatyard into a marina resort. Djurberg did not obtain necessary planning permission and sold the houseboats without residential mooring licences. After purchasers moved into the houseboats, they found out that the moorings were unlawful. Additionally, Djurberg had not paid the Environment Agency for the leisure mooring license. Richmond Borough Council served enforcement notices on Djurberg and removed some of the unlawful pontoons. Specialist Prosecutor for the CPS, Andrew West, said that the CPS intends pursuing 'confiscation proceedings to ensure that Djurberg pays back the money he gained through this criminal operation.'

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has reported that, following an agreement between the US Justice Department and Julian Assange, Assange’s extradition case has come to a conclusion. The CPS has reported that is has facilitated Assange’s departure from the UK to appear before a US federal judge and that his departure will be in accordance with his wishes and those of the US Government. The formal closure of UK Extradition proceedings is still subject to the formal withdrawal of the US extradition request, which has not yet been completed as of 25 June 2024.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has reported on the sentencing of a yard manager who was previously convicted of gross negligence manslaughter. The yard manager, Brian Timmins, has been jailed for seven-and-half years and the company, Timmins Waste Service, has been fined £400,000 after an employee was killed in an industrial shredder. Timmins Waste Service has also been ordered to pay costs of £29,815 to the CPS and £1,874 to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has reported that an additional £2.7m has been recovered from two defendants, Syed Mubarak Ahmed and Shakeel Ahmad, who were convicted in 2007 for their involvement in a £12.6m conspiracy to defraud HMRC and sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment. The CPS has said that the original case involved 21 defendants, and that proceeds of crime proceedings have now resulted in the recovery of more than £10m from these two defendants alone.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has reported that victims of ‘revenge porn’ are often also stalked or harassed by their ex-partners. The CPS’s data, derived from a sample of 825 suspects that were charged with 1,048 revenge porn offences between April 2020 and June 2022, has shown that in 20% of cases suspects are also charged with stalking or harassment, and in 18% of cases suspects were also charged with assault.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has reported that Noel Corry, Garry Haines, Peter Kinsella, WABGS Limited (previously Boulting Group Limited), Tritec Systems Limited and Electron Systems Limited have all been sentenced for their involvement in the bribery at Coca Cola Enterprises UK Limited (CCE). The CPS has provided that Correy was a senior manager at CCE in the Electrical and Automation division since October 1996 and had responsibility for subcontracting site service work at the CCE premises. Corry issued ‘fresh air’ contracts to WABGS Limited, Tritec Systems Limited and Electron Systems Limited in return for cash bribes, tickets for sports and entertainment events and sponsorship of his local football club to an overall value of £950,000.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has reported that Halton Mark Anthony Powell has been sentenced to two years and 16 weeks after pleading guilty on 11 November 2022 to supplying articles for use in a fraud at Southwark Crown Court. The CPS and Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU), found that Powell sold set-top boxes through his business Droidsticks, Ebay and the company websites, which were capable of allowing the end-user to watch premium, subscription-only television content without paying the required fee to the providers. In 2016, police searches seized 1,300 set-top-boxes from an identified lock-up and 121 set-top-boxes from the retail business premises. The CPS has said that evidence from Sky TV estimated the potential loss to be £13,826,460.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has reported that a Tiktok influencer, Mahek Bukhari, and their mother, Ansreen Bukhari, have been sentenced at Leicester Crown Court for the murders of Saqib Hussian and Hashim Ijazuddin after a forced collision on the A46. The CPS has stated that the Bukhari’s organised the attack, with the help of others, in order to ‘silence’ Hussain following the bitter end of a relationship with Ansreen Bukhari. A Senior Crown Prosecutor from the CPS East Midlands, Arinder Ahmed, has commented on the frequent lies told during the investigation by the Bukhari’s. The CPS has reported that evidence gathered from mobile phones, CCTV and the 999 call made by Hussain at the time of the incident uncovered these lies.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has announced that Michelle Farndell was sentenced to five years imprisonment on 30 November 2021 at Winchester Crown Court after defrauding her partner of more than £163.000. Farndell pleaded guilty to fraud offences and theft.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has reported the sentencing of two individuals who made fake applications to banks and a pension company to obtain loans, banking and pension facilities totalling around £178,000 in potential losses. Michael Cross and Fatima Ali used identities of genuine customers to make online applications, and when asked to verify would use pictures of themselves. Ali was convicted of fraud by false representation and was sentenced on 22 December 2023 to three month’s imprisonment, suspended for nine months. Cross was convicted of fraud by false representation and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment on 24 May 2024. Cross was also ordered to pay prosecution costs of £1,200 with a victim surcharge of £154 within three months.
