The Sievert is a measurement unit of radiation close to living tissue. It is the international system (SI) derived unit for a dose equivalent to 1 Joule/kilogram. 1 Sievert = 100 rem. It is named after Rolf Sievert, a Swedish physicist famous for work on the biological effects of radiation. The effective dose in Sieverts is calculated as the absorbed dose measured in Gy multiplied by a weighting factor specific to each type of radiation and organ. Single doses are usually measured in millisievert (mSv) or Microsievert (?Sv) See Becquerel and Gray for comparison.

Restructuring & Insolvency analysis: Re Avanti Communications Ltd is the first major decision in almost 20 years (since Re Spectrum Plus) on the characterisation of fixed and floating charges. The charged assets were a satellite, orbital slots and ground stations used to operate it. The court: (1) made clear that it is unnecessary for there to be a ‘total embargo’ on use of a charged asset for the charged to be fixed, as long as the chargor has no ‘significant commercial freedom’ to deal with the asset; (2) made clear that the proper characterisation of a charge is nuanced and depends on a combination factors, an important factor being that the asset is fixed rather than circulating.
