MedTech Europe has welcomed the European Parliament’s vote on the joint motion for a resolution on the urgent need to revise Regulation (EU) 2017/745 (the Medical Devices Regulation (MDR)), which calls for measures to be adopted to address key challenges and bottlenecks in the implementation of the MDR. The organisation also stated it supports the Parliament’s call for the European Commission to propose a systematic revision of all relevant articles of the MDR and Regulation (EU) 2017/746 the In Vitro Diagnostic Medical Devices Regulation (IVDR)) as soon as possible. MedTech has emphasised that reducing and making predictable initial assessment timelines and costs, making assessments of changes to medical technologies more efficient, and adapting certification timelines to follow a life-cycle approach is key for making devices available to patients.

MedTech Europe, together with the Life Science Manufacturers Association (LSMA) and Verband der Diagnostica-Industrie (VDGH), has submitted a joint letter to the European Commission requesting a delay to proposed amendments to Annex I of EU Implementing Regulation 2021/632 on border controls for products of animal origin. The 18 November 2025 letter, addressed to Deputy Director General for Health Lorena Boix Alonso, warns that the proposed scope expansion could disrupt imports of critical life sciences products including cell culture media, analytical reagents, microbiological testing materials and biopharmaceutical manufacturing components. The associations argue that mandatory border inspections could create supply shortages affecting patient care, public health services and food safety, particularly impacting products with short shelf lives. The letter requests consultation with industry stakeholders, updates to adjacent animal by-products Regulation (EU) 142/2011, and revision of associated Qualification Notes before implementation proceeds.

MedTech Europe, along with 11 other industry associations, has issued a joint statement calling for the withdrawal of the proposed AI Liability Directive (AILD). The coalition argues that the AILD would introduce unnecessary legal complexity, potentially harming EU competitiveness and deterring AI innovation. They emphasise that the recently adopted Product Liability Directive should be implemented and evaluated before considering additional liability frameworks. The statement also highlights concerns about the AILD's potential disruption to established contractual liability practices and its misalignment with the EU's Sustainable Prosperity Deal and the Draghi Report's recommendations for a streamlined AI legal framework.

MedTech Europe has developed a series of concise one-pagers designed to support the effective implementation of the Medical Devices Regulation (EU) 2017/745 (MDR) and the In Vitro Diagnostic Medical Devices Regulation (EU) 2017/746 (IVDR), ahead of a broader legal reform anticipated in 2026. These documents, aimed at a broad and non-technical audience, provide recommendations on four key objectives to enhance system functionality and sustainability. They advocate for expediting initial product approvals, streamlining change notification processes, creating a dedicated accelerated pathway for breakthrough innovations, and transitioning to lifetime risk-based certification in order to reduce duplication and administrative burden. The one-pagers encapsulate collective insights garnered in collaboration with MedTech Europe members and are intended to foster continued dialogue among all stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the MDR and IVDR.
