The Home Office has updated its priority treatment requests caseworker guidance to reflect the introduction of a Priority Service for nationality applications. Applicants who wish to have their application treated as a priority, but whose circumstances do not satisfy the existing priority treatment criteria, may submit their citizenship application through the nationality Priority Service for an additional fee of £500. Decisions are normally expected within 30 working days of biometric submission. Applications that have already been submitted cannot be upgraded to a Priority Service application. Applications requiring enhanced scrutiny, external checks, national security or identity enquiries or which are particularly complex, may fall outside the standard timeframe.

The Home Office has updated its guidance on Permitting Access to Public Funds and introduced a new prioritisation process for change of conditions applications. The guidance notes that all applications must now be triaged on receipt and prioritised where the applicant provides evidence of serious vulnerability and an urgent need for access to public funds. The guidance sets out a three-tier system. Tier one applies where an applicant is street homeless or has a serious vulnerability that makes their situation extremely urgent, and these cases should be considered within 72 working hours. Tier two applies where the applicant or their dependants have serious vulnerabilities, such as likely street homelessness within eight weeks, a child in a precarious or imminently precarious situation, significant health conditions, or domestic abuse, and these cases should be considered as soon as possible and within 14 working days. Tier three applies to all other applications. There is no set service standard for Tier three cases, but they should still be decided promptly. The guidance states that applicants must provide evidence to qualify for Tier one or Tier two prioritisation, that prioritisation does not affect the outcome of the application, and that cases may be re-prioritised if new evidence of vulnerability is provided.
