The changes will be introduced through an amendment to the Immigration Rules on 5 March 2026 and will take effect on 26 March 2026. The decision is stated to follow a 470% increase in asylum claims by Students from the four countries between 2021 and 2025, with claims from legal arrivals accounting for 39% of the 100,000 applications made in the past year. Over five years, 133,760 individuals have claimed asylum after entering legally, and the number of Afghan work visa holders claiming asylum now exceeds the number of visas issued.
