His Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) has updated the guidance notes on completing an N161 form. HM Courts & Tribunals Service updated the guide to the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court (IPEC) small claims track on 7 July 2023. It includes a practice note by Judge Hacon at Annex C, which explains that, from 3 July 2023, there is a change in how cases filed in the IPEC small claims track are processed. From that date, all claims filed either on CE File or in person in London (at the Rolls Building) will be transferred to Manchester. They will be case managed by District Judges in the Manchester Civil Justice Centre. It is expected that most such claims which go to trial will have the trial heard either in person in Manchester or, where the parties prefer, by video link with the Manchester court. However, parties will have the right to apply to have a claim transferred from Manchester to any other court centre which hears IPEC SCT cases, including London.

HM Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) has updated the notice on train company prosecutions, following the Chief Magistrate's judgment on train company prosecution cases to decide how erroneous proceedings and convictions are dealt with. The Chief Magistrate decided that these cases should be declared invalid, and anything paid for that offence should be reimbursed. As a result of the judgment, the sections ‘What happens next?’ and ‘Action we are taking’ in HMCTS's notice on train company prosecutions were removed and superseded by the updated section published on 15 August 2024.

HM Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) has updated its listing questionnaire form titled ‘N170 Pre-trial checklist’. Updates to the form include the addition of ‘intermediate track’ cases to the section which previously related to ‘fast track cases only’. This section now provides that the court will normally give three weeks’ notice of the date fixed for a fast and intermediate track trial unless, in exceptional circumstances, the court directs that shorter notice will be given. This section asks whether the party completing the form would be prepared to accept shorter notice of the date fixed for trial. Other changes include renumbering and reformatting, as well as updates to the section titled ‘document and fee checklist’ so that it is now titled ‘document checklist’ and no longer requests a listing fee, fee account number or an estimate of costs.

His Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) conducted an inspection into the manner in which law enforcement agencies in England and Wales address organised immigration crime. The report, issued on 16 May 2025, examined efforts by the police, the National Crime Agency, and regional organised crime units, revealing that although activities aimed at disrupting organised criminal groups had increased notably since 2021, critical deficiencies remain in intelligence sharing and operational clarity.

HM Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP) has published a thematic review examining women’s experiences across immigration removal centres and short-term holding facilities. The report identifies deficiencies in the identification and management of vulnerability, insufficient attention to women’s needs in mixed-sex establishments, inadequate training and guidance for staff supporting women with complex backgrounds and barriers to communication and family contact. It also records generally positive relationships between women and staff, particularly at Derwentside, the only dedicated immigration removal centre for female detainees.
