The UK has concluded a new security agreement with Iraq, aimed at targeting people smuggling gangs and bolstering border security cooperation. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper signed a joint statement on border security with Iraq's Interior Minister, establishing a framework for tackling people smuggling and wider border security issues. The agreement is supplemented by a declaration of intent to address serious organised crime, including immigration offences, drug trafficking, modern slavery, and illicit finance. The UK has committed £300,000 from its Integrated Security Fund for border training in Iraq, focusing on countering organised immigration crime and narcotics. Both nations have pledged to enhance cooperation on returns of individuals with no right to remain in the UK, while respecting international law and human rights. Additionally, a deterrence communications campaign is planned to counter misinformation spread by criminal gangs. This development marks a significant shift in the UK's approach to irregular migration, emphasising international collaboration through the Border Security Command.
