The Department for Transport (DfT) has announced that the Transport Secretary, Rt Hon Grant Shapps MP, has increased the investment for the TransPennine route upgrades (TRU) from £2.9bn to more than £9bn for the purposes of strengthening the TRU and Northern Powerhouse Rail. The DfT has said this will reduce journey times, set the foundations for Northern PowerHouse Rail, reduce carbon emissions by up to 87,000 tonnes annually and potentially double the amount of construction.
