The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Secretary-General, Petteri Taalas, have jointly released the WMO Statement on the State of the Global Climate for 2019. The report highlighted ‘the tell-tale physical signs of climate’ by emphasising the increasing land and ocean heat, the accelerating sea level rise and melting glaciers. The impact of climate change on socio-economic development, human health, migration and displacement, food security and land and marine ecosystems have also been included in the statement. Guterres also took the opportunity to call for ‘greater priority to initiatives and investment to help communities and nations adapt to climate disruption and build resilience’.
