An independent inquiry following the conviction of surgeon Ian Paterson for 17 counts of wounding patients with intent and three counts of unlawful wounding, has revealed the shortcomings of safety and quality of patient care in the NHS as well as the independent sector. The inquiry found that many patients received unnecessary, incomplete or harmful treatment and that the checks and balances designed to ensure safety of patients in the hospitals Paterson practised in were inadequate.
